Employment

The forecast for employment in Jacksonville is great. Although the two naval bases combined are the region’s top two employers, a host of private companies have also staked claim to the Jacksonville job market. Winn-Dixie Stores Inc., Bank of America, CSX Transportation and others have their headquarters in Jacksonville and Citibank has a credit care office as well.

The region is also home to some major medical employers with Shands Hospital and St. Vincent’s Health Care System being present. Shands is considered one of the country’s cutting-edge hospitals for a number of specialties including cancer care.

Other top employers include the state of Florida, Duval County, the city and United Parcel Service.

The shipping industry is also very active in Jacksonville, which has four major seaport facilities and is home to one of the country’s newest cruise ports. In 2004 the city’s ports handled more than 7.7 million tons of cargo.
